Mario games have no plot really, other than Paper mario. It consists of, OMG the princess is a dumbass and got captured by that retarted green guy agian. Lets call the plumber to save her.
I'm not really familiar with Metroid but I'm not really a huge fan anyway
I don't like Starfox(everyone listen intently for Richards gasp of horror)
And Super Smash Bros doesn't have a plot.

Not only does it have a plot, but they're gonna kill off a main character to add dramatical drama that is also very dramatic(you know which character Richard).
Starfox has a good storyline, if only it wasn't soooo corny.
As for gameplay, there's no better intergalactic-spaceship-shooter-with-genetically-engineered-intelligent-animals-as-pilots. (say THAT 5 times fast)(say, not type)
The characters have some slight depth, at least.
Oh yes, and Richard, Fox and Wolf ARE brothers. They'll reveal that in the next sequel(for a major console, not DS)

Yo poster i'm really happy for you, Imma let you finish. But Benn999 had one of the bes' post of all time. One of the bes' posts of all time!
Mario: fun, versatile character, but didn't pick it because it always has some stupid plot.
Zelda: I almost picked this one, but didn't. can't really think of a good reason. but i had to pick one and only one.
Metroid: good story (for the most part, a little hokey sometimes), excellent gameplay, innovative. overrall tone appeals to me.
Starfox: good gamepley and graphics(up untill it's debut on the cube at least.) but, voice acting is bad, story isn't that great, and I don't like furries.
Smash: i don't think this qualifies as a true franchise, but it is one of best franchises thus far.

i tried playing metroid once...i got lost in a cave for a week and couldn't get out, so i don't think it's the best franchise out there if it can leave people stranded that long
