The song is the basis for an Internet phenomenon known as "Rickrolling", where a YouTube link to the video is disguised as a link to something else, usually breaking news.[1] As a result, the video has received over 4 million hits as of the end of September 2007. The video has also spawned several popular copy-cat videos. The "RickRoll" phenomenon is derived from the "Duckroll" meme of 4Chan which operated before the first RickRoll video was posted on youtube.
