ok guys, I finished my first game (it's my first so don't be too much of a critic)
Rob is going to host a download once I can get it to him (.exe doesn't get through email)

sooooo......

now I need some ideas for a side-scrolling metroid-like game that isn't metroid please.

already working on it:

so far i have:

-basic platforming fizix
-a variety of sprites
- the cling claw (an item you get at some point)

and I've decided that the game is going to be like Cave Story, only not as japanese.

(I beat Cave Story by the way and it is very awesome)

I plan on implementing about 8 or more weapons, hopefully at least 6 or 7 hours of gameplay (but I'll try for more), some good and challenging boss fights, a halfway decent story (but I'll try for an all the way decent one), various items other than the weapons, some kind of upgrade system, and graphics that are visible in the normal light spectrum.

give me some more ideas people!

well ****.

for some reason, laserman doesn't want to shoot up while running to the left or down while he is clinging to a wall, so either he'll just have to settle with not shooting vertically (which would make the game crappy sorta) orĀ  I can stop wasting time with this and start making a game that I can actualy make.

disregard that last post (although no one seems to be looking at this anyhow).

I fixed the problem. only thing is that you will not be able to map shooting to the spacebar. (I'll have a menu where you can map controls).

deal with it.

this is true. It's better to haveĀ  someone that will critisize it (although you're much nicer to my projects in person) than to have someone that will just felate you over it when it does suck. (what?)
anyways, here they:

That has a pretty good graphical style, surprisingly. But yeah, it feels "sterile" or something. I cant put my finger on it, but its missing something, but I'll let you get more into the game before I pass more judgment.

robs right, its blah at the moment.

Needs more color perhaps, gray isn't a very inviting environment.

Enemies will probably spruce it up though, give it some life.

Plus a still picture doesn't do it justice, when its moving its better

you guys are right about the gray, but keep in mind that i only threw together some tiles just so there's something to look at in the test room. in the end there will be many different areas (like metroid) each with its own set of tiles. I'll also add doodads that are just there to create a more interesting environment.

the tileset you see is for the factory-ish area. I'll add some machinery that has nifty animations and whatnot. maybe giant robots that walk across the background (i managed to make flawless scrolling backgrounds btw, y'know the kind that move a little bit as you move to give a sense of depth)

and like i said, the portraits in the text boxes will be touched up.

but all in all, if rob (who is playing the critic in this developement process) says it looks decent even at this early stage, i think I'm doing pretty good.

a few things:

spriting all the laserman sprites is so ****ing tedious so i will be making the graphics with illustrator. the problem is that game maker is not good at scaling down images (illustrator sprites need to be largish to have any good details) so you'd probably need a fast machine to get a decent framerate. also, i've been working on a super mario engine trying to figure out more to making a platformer and i have discovered a better way of doing it so i will probably end up re-writing laserman altogether.

o, i added a fireball shotgun thing.

well i figured out how to do it properly in illustrator (insert sexual connotation joke here) so now i will make a ****load of laserman graffix that look decent and un-pixely.

the unfortunate part is that instead of the average sprite size being around 16-32 pixels, the sprite size now will be around 30 times that size so i will have to scale down each graphice in game maker. this will inevitably cause slowdowns im sure :(
